Chickpeas Sundal is a delicious recipe that is prepared by all devotees on the auspicious occasion of Navarathri. Sundals are popular during Navarathri as these are offered as prasadhams to the guests visiting homes and as offering to the goddess. This sundal is made with chickpeas, urad dal, mustard seeds, chillies, turmeric powder and coconut. It’s delicious, flavoursome and highly nutritious. This way of making sundal I learnt from my mother.
On this Vijayadashami day, I prepared chickpeas sundal….sharing my recipe with you…..
Ingredients
- 1 cup Chick peas
- 1 tsp. Urad Dal
- 2 Red Chillies
- Asafoetida, a pinch
- ¼ tsp. Turmeric powder
- 2 tsps. Oil
- 1 tsp. Mustard seeds
- Curry leaves, a few
- Coconut cut into small pieces, a handful
- Salt, to taste
Method
- Take the chickpeas in a vessel. Wash thoroughly and add water to soak it and set it aside for overnight or for 12 hours. In the morning, drain the water. Add the chickpeas to the pressure cooker, and pressure cook the chick peas along with salt allowing for 7-8 whistles.
- Strain out the chickpeas cooked water and set the cooked chickpeas aside.
- In a pan, heat up oil. Add mustard seeds and allow it to splutter. Add urad dal, asafoetida, red chilies, curry leaves and fry. Do not burn it.
- Add the coconut pieces and fry again.
- Then, add the cooked chickpeas and toss them well. Add turmeric powder and mix well.
- Add salt to taste and then switch off the flame.
- Delicious Chickpeas sundal is ready for neivedhyam or for serving!
