Okra khichadi is a healthy side dish which can be served for any sadya, be it Vishu or Onam or a marriage function, or for an everyday meal. Okra also known as Ladies finger is called Vendekka in Malayalam and can be used for a variety of side dishes. This okra khichadi can be served with rice or any types of roti.
Khichadi is a side dish made from different vegetables like ginger, cucumber, pineapple, lady’s finger, bitter gourd or ethapazham and is often served with rice.

Ingredients
- ½ kg. Vendakka/Okra /Lady’s Finger, uniformly chopped round slices
- 1 cup Grated Coconut
- 2 nos. Shallots
- ½ tsp. Cumin Seeds
- 2 nos. Green Chillies
- ¼ tsp. Mustard seeds
- 1 cup Yogurt /Curd, beaten
- 2 tbsp. Oil or as needed for frying okra
- Salt, as needed
Method
- Wash and pat dry the vendakka/okra. Cut off the ends from the okra/vendakka and slice into uniformly round slices.
- Heat oil in a pan, add chopped okra, chopped green chillies and fry on medium-high till the okra turns slightly brown at the edges. Toss it about periodically, so that it does not burn. It takes about 8- 10 minutes approx. to cook the okra. Transfer the okra to a bowl and set aside. Do not cover. Allow them to cool.
- Grind coconut, cumin seeds and shallots in a mixer.
- In a small frying pan; add oil and temper with mustard seeds, dry red chillies, curry leaves.
- Add the ground mix to this and allow to cook.
- Allow the cooked mix to cool down.
- After it cools down, add yogurt/curd and mix well. Adjust the salt.
- Add it to the cooked okra.
- Cover and set aside for at least 10 minutes to allow the flavours to blend and serve immediately with hot steamed rice.
